A look back at Global Awareness 2015

It's been quite a journey.  Classes worked hard to make an impact on GLPS and the world by raising awareness about a topic that mattered to them.  We thank you and congratulate you for all of your hard work.  We hope you will continue to be the leaders of tomorrow making changes today!

Say it with a T-shirt!

Class 23 had a great time designing T-shirts to wear for their Global Awareness Performance on Thursday evening.  The T-shirt is a lasting reminder of their campaign and the changes they are hoping to make.  Wear it proudly!

Posters

Class 23 made a poster to advertise their campaign. Thank you for the hard work Min-Sik & Sean!

Dead Health Society Presents...

Here is the script for the final performance.  It is an Eater's Anonymous group meeting to demonstrate the effects of junk food on our health.

Script

MC Opening: Sean (standing on stage right)

Good evening ladies and gentlemen.  My name is Sean and tonight our class would like to present about eating disorders. Our class 23, chose this topic because there are so many causes of eating disorders in the world.  We named our campaign “Dead Health Society” and focused on obesity.  Today, we are going to present the Eater’s Anonymous Support group meeting with Stella, Lucy, Max and Sophie.  Let’s give them a round of applause! (Clap)

(Junk food group sit in center of stage, on the green line)

Pizza (Yoon): Hello! My name is Stella.  I really, really love pizza.  Pizza is the most delicious food in the world.  The combination of cheese and tomato paste with bread is fantastic! But, since I ate pizza too much I became so fat.  I can’t go more than 4 hours without pizza! My weight is increasing every day.  What should I do?

Hamburger (Rosie)- Hi, I’m Lucy.  I am totally love hamburgers. Every day I eat hamburgers.  I like hamburgers better than a healthy meal.  I wanted to change this habit however I don’t think vegetables taste good.  These days I find myself getting fatter and fatter.  How can fix this problem?

French Fries (Kyle)- Hi, my name is Max.  I have a serious habit of eating many french fries.  Whenever I go somewhere I always want to eat french fries.  I eat so much and I don’t exercise.  I hate exercising!  I once started playing soccer but it was so hard to run.  It was like climbing a mountain.  I get so tired and I sweat a lot.  If I sweat a lot I get all sticky and awwwwww, I just hate it!

Cola (Doyi)- Hi, my name is Sophie.  I drink too much coke.  I want to stop but I cannot.  I am literally addicted to coke.  Coke is so yummy.  I know Coke is bad for my health and I try to drink milk or water.  However, it doesn’t work.  I am so short because I drink way too much coke.  I easily get stressed, get headaches and etc.  I really need your advice!

Min-Sik- Now let’s hear from our nutritionists. (standing on stage right)

At this point, the junk food group stands up, Kyle & Doyi move to the left and trade places with Noah and Jin.  Rosie and Yoon move right and trade with Na-Yeon and Sol.  The 4 healthy foods, sit down.

Nutritionist 1 Hyo-Young (center stage, microphone)- Many people know that 1 burger set is over 900 calories.  According to McDonald’s, there are some foods that have less than 900 calories .  But do you know that this does not include the calories of the sauces? So if you eat one burger set it has over 900 calories.  The ideal number of calories for men is 2500 a day and for women is 2000 a day.  The information is from e how.

Nutritionist 2 (Yoo-Jung) (center Stage microphone)- Healthy food is good for your body because it has vitamins and nutrients.  For example, broccoli and salads.  These good foods go inside your body and are helping your body grow and stay healthy.  Eating good food is good for you. Salads, eat it, sugar beat it!

MC Meeting (Eun- Hye) (stage right)- Hello ladies & gentlemen.  My name is Eun-Hye.  I’m the second MC for this performance.  The nutritionists talked about how the junk food lovers should behave to save their health.  It’s now 6 months later and let’s meet them again.  I’m sure you will be surprised at their results.

(Sitting in the center of stage on the green line)

Vegetables (Sol)- Hi! Do you remember me? It’s me Stella.  I stopped eating pizza and other junk food and tried to eat healthy food like veggies & fruits. Now I turned into a veggie bowl from pizza! I feel so much better.

Salad (Na- Yeon)- Hello, my name is Lucy.  Six months ago, I was really unhealthy, fat and ugly.  I don’t want to remember that! Can you guys see the difference now? What happened to me? Beat it fast food, eat it healthy food.  No sugar, Yes salad! I really hate hamburgers now because although there is lettuce, it is not fresh like salad.

Baked Potato (Noah)-Do you remember me, the boy who had a serious habit of eating too many french fries 6 months ago? Just in case you forgot,, my name is Max.  I changed so much over the last 6 months. Now I don’t eat French fries.  However I eat healthy baked potatoes. Also, I exercise almost every day. When I said last time exercising is like climbing up a hill, now it’s like going down a hill!

Water (Jin)- Hi my name is Sophie. I used to drink a lot of coke so I was becoming fatter and fatter.  One day my doctor told me to stop drinking coke or else I will have a lot of diseases.  I I tried really hard to stop and every time I want to drink coke I drank a lot of water instead. Also I exercised so I became taller. Water helped me to become healthy and avoid coke.  Right now still I’m trying to drink less coke and more water.

Song Presenter Min-Sik (stage right)- Good evening ladies and gentlemen.  Now I’d like to present to you our song, a parody of “See you Again”.  The title is “Work out Again”. Myself and Dong-bin Won, who is not here to join us today, wrote the lyrics.  It is about an obese boy who is love with junk food who notices himself in a mirror and tries to exercise again.  We also posted the video on You Tube and you can watch it on our class blog.  Now we would like to sing a part of our song for you.  I hope you enjoy it!

Whole Class: (singing)

So let the gym guide your way, yeah
Hold every memory as you go
And every number you weigh, will always lead you fit,fit

[All]
It's been a long day without you, my health
And I'll show you all I did when I work out again
We've come a long way from where we began
Oh, I'll show you all did when I work out again
When I work out again

MC Closing (Na-Gyeong)- Hello my name is Na-Gyeong to announce our ending.  So ladies and gentlemen, first we want to thank you for teaching us so that we can stand here.  We just showed you a performance about teenage obesity.  We’ve been working on this topic every day in Global Awareness, we worked very hard so we give congratulations to all who helped us and also to ourselves.  We hope you all enjoyed our performance. Let’s always eat healthy and be happy.  Please clap for the Dead Health Society.  Thank you very much!

Na-Yeon- Dead Health Society Campaign hopes you will become healthy again! Thank you!   (All class bows) Exit stage in a line (stairs)

FLASHMOB

Class 23 bravely shared their campaign with the unsuspecting GLPS camp in the cafeteria at lunch on Saturday.  While everyone was busy eating their lunch, Class 23 jumped up and shared a parody they made of the popular song "Sugar" and changed the lyrics to "Salad".

What a great way to spread their "Dead Health Society" campaign.  Please watch the video below:

Here are the lyrics:
Sugar
No, thanks
Won’t you change it to some salad now
It’s right here ‘cause I need
Little fat and lot of salad now
Yeah you show me some good foods
Make it aright
Need a lot of fitness in my life
Salad
Yes, please

Won’t you come and put it down on me

Letter to McDonalds

Please use healthy ingredients

To. Charlie Bell (CEO of McDonalds)

Hello, we are students in GLPS. We strongly think that your products such as hamburgers and french fries leads to teenage obesity. Jamie Oliver is also against obesity. He once said "High calorie food makes the teenage obesity increase." The research has shown that McDonald's food has very high calorie. You should be careful because most of the teenagers are eating your food and they eat it frequently. There is more research that your hamburgers do not rot for 18 years! This made us really frustrated because we thought that you are using old ingredients again and again. The hamburgers can't look rotten in appearance even after weeks. We want to know exactly about this and we want to know if you are improving the ingredients you use. WE hope you will make more healthy foods such as salads \. Then even though the person eats more, they'll be healthier than if they are only eating hamburgers. If people don't buy it, you can put it into the set(like burger set) then people will eat or you can put more healthy ingredients in burgers. Furthermore, we hope you will use fresher ingredients that will also improve people's health.
If McDonalds uses fresh ingredients the consumers will trust you more and you'll have more consumers and you'll get more profits. We don't know if you know or not but actually teenage obesity is a really big problem. We hope you consider about our request and try to change. Thanks!

[Minsik:] Damn, who knew? All the food I ate Good food I've been through That I'll be sitting right here talking to you 'Bout another diet I know I loved to eat the fries and laugh But someone told me that it wouldn't last Had to switch up Look at things different, see the bigger mirror Those will be the days Hard work forever pays Now I see me as a better guy (see me as a better guy) Uh How can we not talk about health when health's all that we got? Every health counselor was standing there by my side And now you gon' be with me for the last diet

[Na Kyoung:] It's been a long day without you, my health And I'll show you all I did it when I work out again (I work out again) We've come a long way (yeah, we came a long way) from where we began (you know we started) Oh, I'll show you all I did when I work out again (let me show you) When I work out again (Aah oh, aah oh Wooooh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh) Yeah

[Dongbin:] First we both go out our weight And the vibe is feeling heavy And what's small turn fat  Fat turns to obese And that obese will never be broken The fat will never get lost (and the fat will never get lost) And when exercise comes first Then the fat will always be lost Established it on our own When the weight had to be drawn And that weight is what we reach So remember the work you’ve spent (remember the work you’ve spent)

[Sean] How can we not talk about health when health's all that we got? Every health counselor was standing there by my side And now you gon' be with me for the last diet So let the exercise guide your way, yeah Hold every memory as you go And every number you weigh, will always lead you fit,fit

Media and promotion team : Advice column

Dear Thinny,

I am writing to you for advice. I am in love with junk food.
I can't go without junk food for an hour. I always want to eat fried chickens, hamburgers, and coke. For me, hamburgers are
my brothers because I see them more than 5 times a day.
io really can't live without it. My teachers and my parents
are mad at me because I spend too much money on junk food.
Once I even brought french fries to school and my teacher got really mad at me. I hope you can help me. Please give me some advices. I really need your help...

Yours truly,
Fatty.

Dear  Fatty,

Listen carefully. I think first you should clean up the bad
habit of eatting too much junk food. There is a thing called
"Obesity". Obesity means when you eat too much and you become
fat and not healty. You don't watnt to become fat, right??
These are some ways to help you. First, you should eat less
junk food every day. Maybe you should eat it about once a day.
This will make you happier and more healthy. Another advice for youi will be to become fit and exercise. You can visit the gym
once a week. if you have commitment and won't give up on exercising at least you will lose a "kg" or more. Remember it will be hard but wait for the results. It will turn out good and you will be much happier and healthier.

                                              Yours truly,
                                                Thinny.

Week 2- Strategy Week

A successful campaign will result from planning what you are going to do.   During your strategy week you need to work with your assigned team to organize and plan your campaign.  As a class, you should choose an Awareness Activity and then each team will work on different parts to complete the task.

This week you should also work on a plan for your final campaign presentation at the Global Awareness Expo. The expo will feature all classes in the program and each class will have 10 minutes to present their campaign.  Remember this is a class event where all members will participate in the final presentation.

Once each team has chosen one of the choices above, elect your leader.  This week you need to complete the following tasks:

*      Name your Campaign

*      Write 1 or 2 slogans for your campaign

*      Decide on a awareness activity

*      Publish a blog post

*      Plan your final presentation

As a team you are responsible for completing the tasks listed on the following pages.  Check them off as you complete each one.  It’s time to put your thinking caps on and design a Global Awareness Campaign that will educate, inspire, impact and motivate others to take action.  Before you start, all good campaigns need a name.  What will you call your campaign?

Say it with CHALK

Class 23 took their campaign to the streets and shared their thoughts about teenage obesity and healthy eating:

Week 1: Discovery Week

Week 1 of camp is all about discovery.  With your class you need to brainstorm ideas for your global Awareness Campaign.  Think about what matters to you and what you topic you would like to raise awareness about.

Once you have a topic, the next step is to share it with people.  Our first project to began your campaign is to try Sidewalk Chalk Art.

Sidewalk Chalk Art involves using chalk to decorate a sidewalk or street with some form of art.  Of course, not everyone is an artist, and of course it might rain.  But as a class you can contribute ideas about WHAT to draw and WHERE.   If you are feeling really ambitious, why not try 3D chalk art?

Sidewalk Chalk Art can be simple or elaborate, but just remember you want to make a lasting impression.  The images you draw will fade or wash away with the rain but the message you are trying to send should last in the minds and hearts of those who see it.   Take a picture! Post it on your blog! Send it to your mom and your dad’s uncle’s uncle! That way it lasts forever and can be seen everywhere.  Here is a simple idea for example:
Kindness in Chalk:

This project was to raise awareness about bullying and promote kindness instead.  The organizers asked volunteers to decorate the sidewalks around schools with positive messages for students.  Check it out here: http://www.minnemamaadventures.com/2014/09/30/kindness-chalk-anti-bullying-movement/

Break into teams and start to create a design for your very own Sidewalk Art.  Once you have an idea try to draw it and bring it to your teacher for approval and feedback.  Once your art is approved it's time to take it to the street.  Grab the box of chalk and decorate the pavement.

Don't forget to take pictures and post them on our class blog.

Kony 2012

Have you heard of Kony 2012? It was a viral video that got more views than Psy! The video is about a charity group called Invisible Children whose goal is to catch Joseph Kony.  Kony is accused of recruiting child soldiers in Africa.

The video is very powerful and controversial.  Let's watch it:

Now discuss the video and share your opinion and reaction with your class and teacher.

Welcome to Global Awareness

Are you ready to have fun and start sharing with the world a topic you think needs attention? Here is your chance to make a difference and create a Global Awareness Campaign to share what you think is important in the world today.

Stop Global Warming! No pollution is the solution!  Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Watch your waste!Stop smoking.Don’t Drink and Drive, Arrive Alive.Just say NO to Bullying.

The above of some examples of possible Global Awareness Campaign topics.  With your class, you will brainstorm a topic that is important to you and use this topic to create a Global Awareness Campaign.

Remember to work as a TEAM and spread the word about your topic.
